The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled Saturday, July 12, 2025, for the conduct of local government elections across the state. Political campaigns are expected to commence from Friday, April 18, 2025.
This was disclosed in an official statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of the Commission, Mr. Tope Ojo, and made available to journalists in Lagos.
According to the statement, the Notice of Election has been released in line with Section 21(I) of the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended). The notice covers the election of Chairmen and Councilors in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards in Lagos State.
The Commission explained that preparations are being intensified as the current tenure of local government administrations in the state nears completion. The issuance of the Notice of Election signifies the official commencement of the electoral process.
A run-off or re-run election, if necessary, has been slated for Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Ojo noted that all registered political parties are expected to visit the Commission’s headquarters to collect nomination and other relevant forms for their candidates.
Other key activities in the electoral timetable include a strategic meeting between LASIEC and all registered political parties scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, 2025, and the publication of detailed election guidelines on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
Campaigns and political rallies will be allowed from April 18 to Wednesday, July 9, 2025. Additionally, the window for the submission of nomination forms for substituted or sole candidates will be open from Wednesday, June 18 to Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Chairman of LASIEC, Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections in accordance with global best practices. She assured all political parties of a level playing field and urged strict compliance with the approved election timetable.
