Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested two individuals for impersonating officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspects, Nuche Joseph, 34, and Lawal Rofiat, 29, were apprehended on April 29, 2025, while posing as LASAMBUS officials. Investigations revealed that the duo, operating under the name BrainGrace Ambulance Service, had been masquerading as representatives of the state-run emergency service, charging accident victims for pre-hospital care—services which the Lagos State Government provides free of charge.
Their fraudulent activities came to light after relatives of a deceased accident victim shared their experience on social media.
According to the post, BrainGrace Ambulance demanded N150,000 for emergency care, only for the victim to die en route to the hospital. The family, initially unaware that LASAMBUS services were free, accused the state agency of extortion, sparking public outcry.
Further investigation revealed that the perpetrators had no affiliation with LASAMBUS. The suspects have since confessed to the crime and have been charged to court.
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to providing free emergency medical services and warned the public to be wary of impostors.
