Court Adjourns Suit On Naira Abuse Against TikToker Murja Kunya|LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Federal High Court sitting in Kano has adjourned the sentencing of popular TikTok personality, Murja Ibrahimi Kunya, to May 20, following a last-minute application by the prosecution to amend the charge against her.

Murja is facing trial on a one-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.

The case arose from a viral video showing her spraying and dancing on N400,000 during a party at the Tahir Guest Palace Hotel in Kano in December 2024. She has already pleaded guilty to the charge.

At Tuesday’s hearing, which was scheduled for judgment and sentencing, EFCC counsel Musa Isa surprised the court by applying for an amendment to the existing charge.

The move was strongly opposed by Murja’s defence counsel, Abubakar Saka, who argued that introducing a fresh charge at this stage could delay proceedings and infringe on his client’s right to a fair trial.

He further contended that the defence required adequate time to study the proposed amendment.

However, Justice Simon Amobeda granted the prosecution’s request, ruling that the amendment was in the interest of justice. The court consequently adjourned the case to May 20 for continuation of proceedings.

In the interim, Justice Amobeda ordered that Murja remain in the custody of her legal counsel under the current bail conditions, which include an undertaking to ensure her presence in court.
