Illegal Waste Dumping: LAWMA Seals Lekki Restaurant, Arrests Suspects |LAGOS EYE NEWS

In the early hours of Saturday, the Lekki Estate Residents Association (LERA) reported an incident of illegal waste dumping along Durosimi-Etti Street in Lekki Phase 1, leading to the arrest of suspects and the sealing of a commercial establishment.

A white Ford van with Abuja registration number GWA 136E was caught in the act of indiscriminately discharging refuse. The vehicle was traced to DONALD Restaurant, a nightlife venue located on Road 14 within the estate.

According to the LERA Chairman, the suspects were apprehended on the scene by the association’s Chief Security Officer and taken into custody at the LERA Secretariat. Attempts by the suspects to bribe the security team with ₦100,000 were rejected.

Upon receiving the report, the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, immediately deployed the agency’s Monitoring and Compliance Team to the site. The team took custody of the suspects and sealed DONALD Restaurant for gross environmental violations, citing breaches of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.

This incident highlights a growing concern over non-compliance among several commercial establishments in Lekki Phase 1. Many have failed to register with their assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and have been linked to recurring incidents of illegal waste dumping, particularly during off-peak hours.

LAWMA commended LERA’s swift and principled response, describing the collaboration as a model for community-led environmental enforcement.

The suspects are to be prosecuted in accordance with the law. LAWMA reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental standards across Lagos and urged all residents and businesses to comply with waste management regulations.

“A clean and livable city is everyone’s responsibility,” the agency emphasized.
