BREAKING: Police Officers Kill WAEC Candidate in Ibadan, NANS Demands Justice |LAGOS EYE NEWS
A tragic incident occurred Tuesday morning in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State, as a secondary school student sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was reportedly killed by a stray bullet fired by police officers.
According to reports from Ibadan-based radio station, Splash FM, the student was en route to school in his father’s car to write that day’s examination paper when he was struck by a bullet.
Eyewitnesses say the police officers opened fire while pursuing a Hilux vehicle, during which the stray bullet hit the student, resulting in his death.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expressing deep sorrow and condemnation.
In a statement issued by the NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the student body described the killing as “tragic and avoidable”, calling it a “painful reminder of the unchecked recklessness and brutality within certain quarters of the Nigerian Police Force.”
“That a child, simply pursuing his right to education and striving for a better future, could be killed in such a manner is not only heartbreaking but utterly unacceptable,” the statement read.
Comrade Oladoja further emphasized that there is no justification for the use of live ammunition in civilian areas, particularly near schools or examination centres.
Describing the act as a “national tragedy and a direct assault on the hopes of an entire generation,” NANS issued a five-point demand to the authorities:
- Immediate identification and arrest of the officer responsible.
- A transparent and thorough investigation with public disclosure of findings.
- Swift prosecution of the perpetrator in accordance with the law.
- Adequate compensation for the victim’s family.
- Institutional reforms within the police, including improved training on engagement protocols.
NANS also called on the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, Inspector General of Police, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, and relevant human rights bodies to take urgent action over the incident and rising cases of police brutality in Nigeria.
As of press time, the Oyo State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
