Trump Delays EU Tariff Threat After ‘Very Nice Call’ with Von der Leyen |LAGOS EYE NEWS
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause on his proposed 50-percent tariffs on European Union goods, extending the deadline to July 9 following a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Trump had initially threatened to implement the steep tariffs starting June 1, expressing dissatisfaction over stalled negotiations aimed at preventing what he called a 20-percent “reciprocal” tariff on U.S. exports.
“Negotiations were going nowhere,” Trump said, highlighting his frustration with the pace of talks.
However, the president said he agreed to postpone the measures after von der Leyen personally requested more time to advance discussions.
“She just called me… and she asked for an extension on the June 1st date and said she wants to get down to serious negotiation,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey.
He described the exchange as a “very nice call.”
