Menstrual Hygiene Day: Itu Chairman’s Wife Leads Awareness Campaign, Donates Sanitary Kits to Schoolgirls |LAGOS EYE NEWS

To mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, Mrs. Idongesit Ubong Nkutt, wife of the Itu Local Government Council’s Executive Chairman, spearheaded a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign in Itu, distributing sanitary materials to female students.

The initiative, themed “Together for a Period-Friendly World,” saw Mrs. Nkutt visit West Itam Secondary School, Ekit Itam II, and Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam. There, she engaged the girls in open discussions about menstruation, proper hygiene, and the significance of self-care during adolescence.

Addressing the students, Mrs. Nkutt emphasized that menstruation is a natural and essential part of growing up, urging the girls to adopt healthy hygiene habits and to shun stigma and shame.

“During your period, remember to bathe at least twice daily, change your sanitary pads every four to six hours, use cotton underwear, wear deodorant, and never skip your bath,” she advised.

She highlighted that such practices not only prevent infections but also boost personal confidence. She also spoke on other aspects of personal hygiene, such as handwashing, oral care, and maintaining clean underwear.

To support the students’ hygiene needs, Mrs. Nkutt distributed sanitary pads, toothbrushes, and tissue paper—a gesture that was met with appreciation and excitement among the students.

At West Itam Secondary School, the visiting team was received by Mr. Uwakmfon Ukut and staff members who lauded the initiative. Meanwhile, the Principal of Community Secondary Commercial School, Mrs. Mary Dominic Okon, described the visit as “thoughtful and impactful.”

Mrs. Nkutt was accompanied on the outreach by the Councilor representing Itu Clan Ward 2, Hon. Mary Nyong, and members of her personal staff.

The campaign underscores the commitment of Itu Local Government leadership to promoting adolescent health and fostering a supportive environment for young girls.
