Ukraine Claims Destruction of $7 Billion in Russian Aircraft in Long-Range Drone Attack |LAGOS EYE NEWS
In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the destruction of Russian bombers worth billions of dollars in what is described as the longest-range drone strike of the war.
Ukrainian officials reported that the assault targeted Russian aircraft as far as Siberia, a bold move that comes amid preparations for ceasefire talks in Istanbul.
On Sunday, Ukraine stated that its drones caused damage to $7 billion worth of Russian aircraft parked at four airbases located thousands of kilometers inside Russian territory. Unverified video footage circulating online appeared to show aircraft engulfed in flames, billowing thick smoke from what appeared to be a devastating attack.
A source from the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) confirmed that the strikes hit 41 planes, which were allegedly used in bombing Ukrainian villages. The drones used in the attack were reportedly concealed within transportation containers, which were remotely opened to unleash the devastating assault.
As the conflict continues to intensify, both Russia and Ukraine launched large-scale drone barrages overnight.
Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed the strikes, which took place just hours before negotiations between the two countries were set to begin in Istanbul. These talks mark only the second round of direct discussions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The timing of the drone assault and the upcoming negotiations raise further questions about the prospects for peace and a potential ceasefire in the months to come.
