Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and values, stating that while the country’s democracy is not perfect, continuous efforts will be made to improve it.

Speaking on Thursday through a statement in commemoration of Democracy Day, the Governor paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, and his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.

“June 12 reminds us of the courage and sacrifice that brought us to where we are today. We remember MKO Abiola and Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, whose legacies continue to inspire our democratic journey,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Their struggle, along with that of countless pro-democracy activists and millions of Nigerians, laid the foundation for the return of civilian rule in 1999 — a system we have now practiced for 26 years.”

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the imperfections of the democratic system but emphasized that it belongs to the people. “Our democracy is not perfect, but it is ours, and we will continue working to make it better,” he stated.

“In Lagos, our strength lies in our diversity — in our different backgrounds, beliefs, and stories. June 12 is a moment to celebrate that unity and remind ourselves that even in disagreement, we are bound together by a common purpose.”

The Governor urged residents to protect the gains of democracy and continue to believe in Nigeria’s potential.

“Happy Democracy Day, Lagos. Let’s keep moving forward, together,” he concluded.
