Information Minister Applauds GOCOP’s Role in Shaping Digital Journalism |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) for its leadership and foresight in advancing the frontiers of responsible journalism through the launch of its latest publication, “Nigeria Media Renaissance – Perspectives on Online Publishing.”

Speaking on Tuesday at the public presentation of the book in Abuja, the Minister described the event as a timely intervention in an era where the digital revolution is reshaping the media landscape. He praised GOCOP for its sense of responsibility in bringing the publication to fruition, stating that it invites much-needed reflection on the role of the media in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

“At a time when digital technology is redefining how news is produced and consumed, we must also consider the broader implications for our democracy, our society, and our future,” Idris said.

He used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the nation recently celebrated 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. While calling the milestone worthy of celebration, he emphasised that democracy must be measured by its ability to improve citizens’ lives through infrastructure development, social services, and the protection of rights and freedoms.

The Minister reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning the Nigerian economy from consumption to production through far-reaching reforms and investment in critical infrastructure. According to him, these efforts are aimed at translating democratic governance into real benefits for the Nigerian people.

Highlighting the crucial role of the media in supporting this transformation, Idris stressed that digital and online media platforms must be partners in national development by promoting truth, shaping public discourse, and holding leadership accountable.

“In this context, I welcome the idea of a Media Renaissance — a conscious effort to reset the tone, ethics, and values that underpin journalism in the digital age,” he said. “It is not just about doing new things; it is about doing things better.”

The Minister also addressed the growing threats of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, warning that such phenomena have dangerous implications for national peace and security. In response, he announced that the Federal Government is making significant progress towards the establishment of a UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute in Abuja, set to commence operations by November 2025.

“This initiative will position Nigeria as a global leader in the responsible use of media and information in the digital era,” he said, urging GOCOP to embrace the MIL Institute’s offerings to enhance fact-checking and journalistic standards.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to a free, responsible, and vibrant press, Idris said the administration is eager to work with media stakeholders to raise professional standards, promote media literacy, and tell stories that inspire national progress.

He concluded by applauding GOCOP for its continued leadership in redefining digital journalism in Nigeria, saying the organisation’s efforts will shape the future of the country’s media space.

“Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Minister concluded.
