The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a mix of thunderstorms, moderate rainfall, and sunshine across various parts of the country from Friday to Sunday.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet said thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of the northern region on Friday. Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in the morning over areas including Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Bauchi States, while other northern locations will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds.
NiMet also indicated that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are likely in the afternoon and evening hours.
For the central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected in the morning. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger, and Plateau States.
In the southern region, cloudy skies are expected with light rains likely in the morning over Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. Moderate rainfall is forecast for most parts of the region as the day progresses.
On Saturday, NiMet predicted sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region in the morning. Isolated thunderstorms and light rains are anticipated over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, Zamfara, Yobe, and Kaduna States. Afternoon and evening periods will bring thunderstorms with moderate rains to Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, and several other northern states.
The central region will see early morning thunderstorms with light rains in parts of Niger and Plateau States. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rains are expected in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau States.
Cloudy skies are expected in the southern region on Saturday morning, with chances of rain in Abia, Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa States. Moderate to heavy rains are expected later in the day.
By Sunday, thunderstorms will persist in the northern region. Morning showers are anticipated over parts of Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States. Other areas in the region will remain sunny with patches of clouds. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno, and Yobe States.
For the central region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning with chances of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Plateau States. Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated later in the day over Benue, FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau States.
Morning rains are forecast for Ondo, Edo, Ogun, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States in the southern region, with the rest of the day remaining mostly cloudy. Moderate to heavy rains are expected later in the day.
NiMet has urged the public to take precautions, noting that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in some areas.
“Ensure loose objects are fastened to avoid collisions. Avoid driving during heavy rainfall. Disconnect electrical appliances from sockets and stay away from tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches or trees,” the agency warned.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning and safety.
