The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
The revered monarch, who ascended the throne in 1960, reigned for an extraordinary 65 years making him the longest-serving traditional ruler in West Africa.
Oba Adetona reportedly died on Sunday, just hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend and Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting to the news, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, expressed deep sorrow, describing the monarch as “a symbol of unity, wisdom, and progress.” The governor highlighted the Awujale’s contributions to the modernization of Ijebuland and his pivotal role in turning the Ojude Oba festival into an internationally celebrated cultural event.
“Oba Adetona’s unwavering commitment to education, health, tradition, and communal development has left a legacy that will endure for generations,” Governor Abiodun said in a statement.
During his reign, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable infrastructural growth, economic advancement, and a cultural renaissance that reaffirmed its historical significance within Nigeria.
As condolences continue to pour in from across the country, the people of Ijebuland and beyond remember Oba Adetona not just as a royal father, but as a visionary who bridged tradition with modernity.
Funeral arrangements and official mourning protocols are expected to be announced in the coming days.
