Tributes continue to pour in following the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.
The United States Mission in Nigeria, in an official condolence message, expressed deep sympathy to the government and people of Nigeria. The Mission described Buhari as “a leader whose life was defined by service, discipline, and a commitment to restore integrity to public office,” while also highlighting his efforts in strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.
“Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss,” the statement read.
In Maiduguri, the Secretary of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Hajiya Fati Abatcha, also paid tribute to the late leader. In a statement issued through her Media and Publicity aide, Hon. Zanna Shettima, Hajiya Fati described the former president as an “untiring promoter of peace and unity in the country.”
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I mourn the passing of the former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” she said.
She noted that Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s leader both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected President (2015–2023), had a clear vision for national unity and progress.

“President Buhari was not just a towering figure in our nation’s history, but a man whose life embodied discipline, resilience, and patriotism,” she added.
The late president’s death marks the end of a significant era in Nigerian politics, and preparations are underway for national mourning and burial arrangements.
