The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, was laid to rest on Monday at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following traditional rites observed in a solemn and dignified ceremony.
Oba Adetona, who passed away at the age of 91, was Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarch, having ascended the throne in 1960 at the age of 26. His reign spanned an impressive 64 years, marked by a steadfast commitment to cultural preservation, principled leadership, and the modernisation of the Ijebu nation.
The private burial ceremony was attended by members of the royal family, Ijebu high chiefs, and a host of dignitaries from across the country. Among those present were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, business mogul Aliko Dangote, and Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate).
Though the final rites were held away from public view in keeping with traditional customs, hundreds of Ijebu indigenes gathered across the ancient town to pay their respects. Many described the late monarch as “fearless,” “modern,” and “a custodian of integrity and justice.”
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona’s legacy includes a tireless defence of traditional institutions and an unwavering advocacy for Ijebu interests at both state and national levels. He is remembered for his reform-minded vision and unshakable dedication to the dignity of his people.
Mourning continues across Ijebuland as the people bid farewell to a revered king whose influence extended far beyond the boundaries of his domain.
