The Sokoto State Government has officially banned all “signing-out” celebrations among graduating secondary school students, citing growing concerns over indiscipline and public disorder.
The directive, which applies to both public and private schools across the state, was announced in a circular issued on Thursday, July by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala.
According to Prof. Ala, the decision was prompted by a surge in reports of student misconduct during such celebrations. These incidents reportedly include acts of vandalism, reckless behaviour, and disruptions to public peace.
He noted that the tradition, once meant to mark the end of an academic journey, has degenerated into a platform for chaos and a deviation from core educational values.
“The Ministry is determined to restore discipline and ensure students remain focused and responsible,” Prof. Ala stated.
He warned that any school found flouting the directive will face appropriate sanctions.
The Commissioner also called on parents, guardians, and school authorities to support the enforcement of the policy, emphasizing the collective responsibility to uphold decorum and academic integrity within the school system.
