Renowned German biathlete and double Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier has died following a tragic mountaineering accident on Laila Peak (6,069m) in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The 31-year-old sports legend lost her life on July 28 during an expedition in the Hushe Valley.

According to reports, Dahlmeier was struck by a sudden rockfall at an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres while climbing alongside her partner, Marina Krauss. Harsh weather conditions severely hampered rescue efforts, and the recovery mission was officially called off on July 29.

Dahlmeier, who retired from professional biathlon in 2019, was celebrated for her historic performance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, where she became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events. Beyond her sporting achievements, she was also a certified mountain guide and an active member of mountain rescue services, dedicating her post-athletic life to promoting outdoor adventure and environmental awareness.

Germany is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished athletes a woman remembered not just for her athletic prowess, but for her humility, courage, and deep connection to nature.

In a heartfelt statement, Team Trans Karakoram, who organized the expedition, expressed their grief:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Laura Dahlmeier, a legendary athlete and passionate mountaineer, who lost her life during an ascent of Laila Peak in the Hushe Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan.”

“Laura’s unmatched courage, strength, and spirit inspired millions around the world. From the Olympic podium to the remote peaks of the Karakoram, she carried grace, resilience, and humility wherever she went.”

“Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with her family, friends, climbing partner Marina Krauss, and all who knew and admired her.”

“May her adventurous soul rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the mountains she loved so deeply. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.”

Dahlmeier leaves behind a legacy of excellence, inspiration, and an enduring passion for the mountains she called home.
