LAGOS EYE NEWS – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says former President Goodluck Jonathan has not informed him of any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made this known during a media parley with journalists in Abuja on Friday, while reacting to speculations that Jonathan was being pressured to return to the race.
“You’re the one telling me here. Jonathan has never told me; he has never called me one day that, look, I’m being pressured to run. If he calls me and asks, I’ll tell him my mind,” Wike stated.
He dismissed the reports as unfounded, adding that he would not rely on rumours published in newspapers to form an opinion.
On the emergence of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike distanced himself from the process.
“I don’t know about Tanimu Turaki becoming chairman. Maybe it’s for another faction it’s not the PDP I know,” he said, adding that the planned PDP convention in Ibadan next month was illegal and he would not attend.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Jonathan is under pressure from Niger Delta leaders, including ex-militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, to abandon any plans to recontest in 2027.
The leaders are reportedly urging the former president to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid instead of returning to the race.
