The Federal Government has faulted the decision of the United States to designate Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom, describing the move as misguided and based on “misinformation, misrepresentation and faulty data.”
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to safeguarding the rights of all Nigerians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, while intensifying efforts to end terrorism in the country.
Mr. Idris noted that while Nigeria has acknowledged Washington’s position, it firmly rejects any claim that the government is failing to act against religiously motivated violence.
«“The Federal Government has always recognised the security challenges that have beset our country since 2009 with the advent of Boko Haram terrorists,” he said.
“However, any narrative suggesting that Nigeria is indifferent to religious attacks is simply false. Terrorism in Nigeria does not target any religion or ethnic group—it is a war against all peace-loving Nigerians.”»
The minister also dismissed recent threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump about possible military intervention in Nigeria, describing them as “unfortunate and unjustified,” and stemming from “a wrong perception of Nigeria’s complex security realities.”
He emphasised that the Tinubu administration has made “unprecedented progress” in degrading terrorist networks and restoring stability in several parts of the country.
While reaffirming Nigeria’s respect for religious freedom and human rights, Idris urged the United States to adopt a more constructive approach through dialogue and partnership rather than criticism.
«“Nigeria welcomes dialogue, cooperation, and support from all foreign partners, including the United States, in addressing our shared security concerns,” he said.
“We invite all our partners to join us in this noble endeavour anchored on trust, collaboration, and mutual respect.”»
The minister further highlighted that Nigeria’s security situation is exacerbated by regional instability in the Sahel, the proliferation of arms following Libya’s collapse, and local conflicts worsened by climate change and desertification.
