Ghana ranked 6th in world, 1st in Africa with largest gold deposits |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Ghana has been ranked 6th in the world and 1st in Africa for the largest gold deposits, according to the World Gold Council’s 2025 Gold Demand Trends report.

The report reveals that Ghana holds gold deposits amounting to 140.6 tonnes, positioning it as Africa’s leading gold producer. This achievement is attributed to increased investment in the mining sector and improved regulation of artisanal mining activities across the country.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines noted that gold accounts for about 40 percent of the nation’s total export earnings, underscoring its crucial role in driving economic stability and growth.

Globally, China leads the list of the largest gold-producing nations with 380.2 tonnes, representing about 10 percent of total global output. The country’s mining sector is dominated by state-owned enterprises such as China National Gold Group and Shandong Gold.

Russia ranks second with 330 tonnes, with most of its reserves located in Siberia and the Far East. Australia, Canada, and the United States follow in third, fourth, and fifth positions, with deposits of 284 tonnes, 202.1 tonnes, and 158 tonnes respectively.

The World Gold Council report underscores Ghana’s growing prominence in the global mining industry and its continued dominance on the African continent.
