The Imo Government on Thursday, urged youths in the state to refrain from drug abuse,, especially as the as the yuletide season approaches.
This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen in Owerri, by Special Adviser to Gov. Hope Uzodinma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna.
Obonna warned that the abuse of drugs and harmful substances could pose great danger to individuals, families, and community at large.
He, consequently, underscored the need for the youth as well as citizens, to focus on the joy of the season, rather than engaging in drug peddling.
“ The yuletide season is a time to celebrate, but it is also a time when many young people are tempted to try drugs or get involved in bad activities.
“The dangers of illicit drugs include a serious threat to health, well-being, and the future, as well as addiction, strained relationships, financial ruin, and even death.
“I urge all Imo youths to resist this temptation and build a bright future “, he said.
He urged youths not to succumb to peer pressure or curiosity, adding that it is not worth risking their future.
Obonna warned that the consequences of drug abuse can be dire and could include mental health issues such as anxiety, depression; and social problems such as isolation and community rejection.
He noted that it could also lead to legal consequences such as imprisonment and fines.
He consequently, advised youths to engage in positive activities like sports and arts, build healthy relationships with family and friends, pursue education and career goals and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
The special adviser further urged youths struggling with addiction or tempted to try drugs to take advantage of the state government’s youth support programs and the counseling and rehabilitation centers available in the state.
Meanwhile, he urged parents and guardians to talk to their children and wards about the risks of substance abuse and provide a supportive environment for them.
“ This yuletide, commit to staying off illicit drugs, prioritise your future, protect your health, and contribute to building a stronger Imo state”, he said.
