The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says the 16 lawmakers who left the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State had the constitutional right to do so.
Wike spoke on Friday while briefing journalists after inspecting an interchange bridge under construction in Abuja.
The sixteen lawmakers, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had earlier announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary on Friday.
Amaewhule said they left due to divisions within the PDP and expressed readiness to work with President Bola Tinubu.
Reacting, Wike said the development was unfortunate but expected, given the party’s internal crisis.
He noted that although 16 out of 27 lawmakers defected, about 10 remained in the PDP, and his camp would continue working with them.
Wike also clarified that he was not informed before the defections but maintained that the lawmakers acted within their rights.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP and urged the party to put its house in order to avoid further losses.
