Benin’s government says the military has successfully crushed an attempted coup launched by a small group of soldiers who claimed to have ousted President Patrice Talon.
Interior Minister Alassane Seidou announced on Sunday that the mutinous soldiers had sought to destabilise the country and its institutions but were swiftly overpowered by loyal security forces.
Earlier in the day, eight armed soldiers appeared on state television under the name “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), declaring President Talon removed from office and announcing a lieutenant colonel as their new leader.
They cited grievances including insecurity in northern Benin, neglect of fallen soldiers’ families, and unfair promotions within the military.
However, the presidency later confirmed that President Talon was safe, dismissing the plotters as a small faction that had briefly seized the state broadcaster. Officials said the regular army had regained control, assuring citizens that “the city and the country are completely secure.”
By midday, tensions remained visible in parts of Cotonou, where gunfire was heard and soldiers blocked access to the presidential offices and state television.
Several key areas, including the Sofitel Hotel and districts hosting international institutions, were also cordoned off. Despite the disruptions, other parts of the city remained calm, with no military presence reported at the airport.
