The elections for new executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, are ongoing at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports on Tuesday that journalists across the chapels trooped out in an orderly manner to vote in candidates to lead the association for the next three years.
The journalists are voting for candidates to fill the positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer.
The offices of the Financial Secretary, Auditor and Assistant Secretary are to be filled through a by-election to be conducted later.
By this, the state NUJ Chairman, Ademola Babalola, has concluded his tenure, having been first elected in December 2019 for a three-year term with a second term election in December 2022.
NAN reports that the chairmanship position is being contested by Akeem Abas, Raji Adebayo and Sola Oladapo.
Abas, the outgoing treasurer of the union, is from the Correspondents’ Chapel, Adebayo is also from the Correspondents’ Chapel, while Oladapo, the union’s outgoing secretary, is from the Federal Ministry of Information Chapel.
NAN observes the presence of police personnel as officials of the NUJ National peacefully coordinate the elections.
However, some journalists expressed their displeasure at being omitted from the final voters’ list, thus making them unable to exercise their voting rights.
The results of the elections are expected to be announced later in the day.
