Sanwo-Olu approves recruitment of 150 additional firefighters in Lagos |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the recruitment of an additional 150 firefighters to strengthen emergency response and improve public safety across the state.

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye, announced the approval while flagging off the training exercise for Squad 23 of the service in Ikeja.

She said the recruitment forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to build a resilient, well-equipped and professionally trained fire and rescue service.

The latest intake adds to previous recruitments under the Sanwo-Olu administration. In 2020, the state employed 100 firefighters ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic to reinforce frontline emergency services. Two years later, in 2022, the government carried out what it described as the largest single recruitment in the history of the Lagos fire service, with 435 firefighters enlisted.

Their passing-out parade was held in October 2022 as part of activities marking the service’s 50th anniversary. The celebrations also included the commissioning of 62 fire-fighting vehicles, the opening of new fire stations in Ajegunle, Ebute Elefun and Oba Oniru in Lekki, and the inauguration of a purpose-built headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.

Ms Adeseye said the newly recruited 150 firefighters, employed in November 2025, are currently undergoing intensive training at the upgraded Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Academy. The programme includes a professional basic firefighting competency course and a short service course, aimed at preparing them for operational duties in line with international standards.

She added that the Lagos State Government remains committed to investing in personnel development, modern infrastructure and equipment to protect lives, property and the environment across the state.
