A commercial bus driver allegedly stabbed an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and fled the scene during an enforcement operation at Ojota Interchange in Lagos.
LASTMA officials said the incident occurred over the weekend after officers intercepted a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EKY 693 YK along the Ojota–Ketu corridor.
The driver was reportedly stopped for operating the vehicle with its passenger door open while carrying commuters, an offence considered dangerous to passengers and other road users.
According to the agency, the driver resisted arrest and attempted to escape by driving over the road median. However, the vehicle reportedly broke down, preventing his escape.
Officials said the suspect then allegedly became violent, grabbed a broken bottle from inside the vehicle, and attacked the enforcement team. One LASTMA officer sustained serious injuries after being stabbed in the fingers of his right hand during the confrontation.
The injured officer was rushed to a medical facility, where he underwent emergency surgery. Medical personnel reportedly performed reconstructive procedures on two of his fingers due to severe fractures and blood loss. He is currently receiving treatment and remains under medical observation.
Meanwhile, LASTMA authorities confirmed that the commercial bus involved in the incident has been impounded in accordance with traffic regulations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
The agency condemned the attack, describing it as a serious assault on law enforcement personnel carrying out their lawful duties.
