The Department of State Services (DSS), has filed criminal charges against former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El‑Rufai, at the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja.
According to court documents dated 16 February 2026, the charges were brought on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria over allegations of unlawful interception of communications and related offences.
The DSS alleges that Mr El-Rufai admitted during a televised interview on Arise TV that he and associates intercepted the phone communications of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Prosecutors say the alleged actions violate provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
They further claim the alleged interception compromised public safety, national security, and created apprehension among members of the public.
The case is expected to proceed before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
