Officials say an investigation is under way following the circulation of a viral video in which a young woman, identified as Mirabel, alleged she had been sexually assaulted.
In a statement, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) said it had received widespread public concern after the video was shared on social media.
The agency confirmed that, after issuing an earlier public statement, it was able to establish contact with a close friend of the alleged survivor. According to the DSVA, the friend confirmed that the young woman had been discharged from the hospital.
The agency thanked members of the public who provided information via direct messages and those who tagged the organisation online to ensure what it described as “swift intervention”.
However, the DSVA said it had since verified that the alleged incident took place in Ogun State, placing the matter outside its jurisdiction.
“In the spirit of inter-agency collaboration and survivor protection,” the agency said, “all relevant information at our disposal has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State.”
The Ogun State Police Command is now handling the case, according to the statement. Authorities expressed confidence that the survivor would cooperate with investigators to enable what they described as a thorough investigation and due process.
Police in Ogun State have yet to provide further details about the case.
