The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed
has praised the military and police for their swift response after a mob attack on a unit command office in southern Nigeria left an officer dead.
He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for what he described as a “prompt and decisive intervention”.
According to the FRSC, the unrest followed a crash rescue operation near the Benin Toll Gate axis, on Thursday where two trucks reportedly collided. One of the truck drivers was killed in the crash, while several FRSC personnel sustained critical injuries.
The agency said one of its officers later died despite receiving urgent medical attention.
In the aftermath of the collision, an angry crowd reportedly besieged and vandalised the unit command formation. Authorities said the rapid deployment of security operatives helped to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Mr Mohammed condemned the attack on FRSC personnel and facilities, describing it as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable”. He said operatives were carrying out their lawful duty to save lives when the crash occurred.
While offering condolences to the families of the deceased driver and the fallen officer, as well as to the wider FRSC workforce, the Corps Marshal ordered a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of the crash and the circumstances surrounding the mob action.
He said anyone found culpable would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to promoting safer roads across Nigeria and urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and supportive of its operations.
