Actor Eric Dane, widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan in the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53.

Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon following what his family described as a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The family confirmed his death in a statement cited by CBS and other media outlets.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read.

The actor publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis last year, drawing widespread support from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.

Born in San Francisco, Dane began his acting career with a television debut in a 1991 episode of Saved by the Bell. He rose to prominence in 2006 when he joined Grey’s Anatomy, earning acclaim for his role as the charismatic and skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Sloan.

Dane’s performance on the long-running series cemented his place as a household name and contributed significantly to the show’s enduring popularity.
