Sanwo-Olu Increases BRT Standard Routes by 13% |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a 13% increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes.

In a statement released on Monday by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head, Corporate Communication, LAMATA said the governor authorised the adjustment following what officials described as a strong appeal from regulated public transport operators, who warned that mounting economic pressures were threatening the sustainability of operations.

According to him, the revised fares will take effect from Monday, 2 March 2026.

He said the decision was intended to cushion the impact of prolonged economic challenges affecting the transport sector. They added that the increase aligns with the government’s previously approved annual fare review mechanism.

The urgency of the review, according to the authorities, reflects persistent inflationary pressures. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that Nigeria’s inflation rate closed 2025 at 15.2%.

Bus Operating Companies (BOCs) have faced rising operational costs in recent months, including higher spending on vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries. Operators say the financial strain has intensified following the implementation of the new national minimum wage structure.

Several operators are also investing in newer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient buses in an effort to maintain service standards, improve passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.

The state government said it remains committed to balancing affordability for commuters with the need to ensure safe, reliable and efficient public transport services across Lagos.
