AGF withdraws charge against Mike Ozekhome |LAGOS EYE NEWS REPORTS
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has withdrawn a criminal charge filed against senior lawyer Mike Ozekhome over alleged forgery.
The decision was announced on Tuesday y at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Maitama, Abuja.
The Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), told Justice Peter Kekemeke that the AGF had decided to take a holistic review of the matter to determine the most appropriate course of action.
Following the application – which was not opposed by the defence team led by Paul Erokoro (SAN) the court struck out the three-count charges.
The case was initially instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Prosecutors had filed a three-count charge at the FCT High Court in Abuja, accusing Mr Ozekhome of alleged forgery, fraud and the use of false documents.
The allegations were linked to a disputed property in London, located at 79 Randall Avenue, NW2 7SX.
According to court filings, prosecutors alleged that Mr Ozekhome knowingly received the property, which he claimed had been gifted to him, and used a forged Nigerian passport in support of that claim.
Mr Ozekhome had denied wrongdoing.
The withdrawal of the charge effectively discontinues the proceedings for now. Under Nigerian law, a case that is struck out rather than dismissed can potentially be refiled.
