Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu is set to replace Kayode Egbetokun as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, according to senior security sources.
The development signals a significant shift in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, although no official statement has yet been issued by the presidency.
Sources within the police high command said the transition process was already under way at the time of reporting.
“It is confirmed; AIG Tunji Disu is the new IGP. An official announcement will be made to the public soon,” a senior officer said.
Another official described the move as a “double confirmation”, suggesting that internal handover procedures had commenced.
Mr Disu previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and also headed the force’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a specialised unit tasked with tackling serious and organised crime. Colleagues describe him as an experienced officer with a strong background in intelligence-led operations.
Though no official announcement from the presidency as at the filing of this report. According to the Premium Times report, Mr Egbetokun has stepped down from his position at the President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
Multiple sources within the Nigeria Police Force have described the transition as already in motion, with jubilant reactions reported at police headquarters in some accounts circulating on social media.
The development follows months of speculation and controversy surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure, including debates over retirement age provisions, alleged scandals (some of which were dismissed by supportive groups as baseless), and calls for reforms in police leadership ahead of future electoral cycles.
