The Presidency has confirmed the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Mr Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun after he submitted a letter citing pressing family considerations.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act, stepped down earlier on Monday.
The President commended the outgoing police chief for his decades of service to the nation and his efforts in strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his time in office.
He described Egbetokun’s tenure as marked by dedication, professionalism, and commitment to duty.
Following the development, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
According to the Presidency, the decision was taken in view of the prevailing security challenges across the country and in accordance with existing laws and legal guidance.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity would provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.
The statement further noted that in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and well-equipped to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
