Bomb Blasts Rock Maiduguri, 12 Killed, Over 50 Injured as Amnesty International Condemns Attack|LAGOS EYE NEWS

A series of bomb explosions rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday evening, leaving at least 12 people dead and more than 50 others injured.

The coordinated attacks reportedly began around 6:30 p.m. when suspected suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices at several crowded locations across the city. The blasts occurred at the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the popular Monday Market, and the area around the Post Office, one of the busiest commercial hubs in Maiduguri.

The explosions happened at a time when many Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan, causing panic among residents and traders in the affected areas.

Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the attacks, describing them as vicious and unlawful.

“The coordinated attacks by Boko Haram that killed at least 12 people and injured over 50 more Monday night are vicious, unlawful and demonstrate a contemptible disregard for human life,” the organization said in a statement.

Amnesty International further called on the insurgent group to end what it described as a campaign of violence against civilians.

“Boko Haram must end its campaign of vicious and unlawful killings of civilians. These deplorable attacks took place at a time when Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan and demonstrates complete disregard for human life,” the group stated.

According to the organization, Boko Haram has intensified attacks targeting civilians since January 2026, including assaults on villages and the abduction of women and girls.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian government to act swiftly to protect civilians and prevent further attacks.

“The Nigerian authorities must act swiftly and ensure that all civilians are protected,” the organization added.
