Explosions Rock Maiduguri as Residents Panic|LAGOS EYE NEWS

Multiple explosions rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening, triggering panic among residents and raising fresh security concerns in the state capital.

The blasts were reported at about 7:30 p.m. on March 16, 2026, in at least three different locations across the city.

Eyewitnesses said two of the explosions were heard around the El-Kanemi Monday Market area and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

A resident, Abdul Ahmed, told journalists that the loud explosions caused confusion in the area as people ran for safety.

“We heard two loud blasts around the Monday Market area and close to the teaching hospital. People started running in different directions because no one knew exactly what had happened,” he said.

Another resident, Fadila Abdulrahman, also confirmed the incidents, noting that a third explosion was reported around the Post Office area within the city.

“There was also another blast near the Post Office. Many people became frightened and quickly left the area,” she said.

Reacting to the development, the Borno State Police Command said security operatives had been deployed to the affected locations to assess the situation and ensure public safety.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that the command had received reports of the explosions and that investigations were ongoing.

Taking to his X account, Nahum Daso Kenneth, shared, “Ongoing clearance operations by Borno State Police Command EOD Unit at (1) University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, (2) Maiduguri Monday Market, and (3) Post Office Flyover following three suspected suicide bomb incidents.”

He further added that “Normalcy has been restored” while encouraging and advising residents to remain “calm and maintain vigilance.”, Nahum Daso

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts were being made to determine the cause of the blasts.

“Our personnel have been dispatched to the scenes, and preliminary assessments are ongoing. Members of the public are advised to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation regarding casualties or the exact cause of the explosions. Security agencies are expected to provide further updates as investigations progress.
