PenCom Alerts Nigerians to Surge in Fake Recruitment Scams, Warns Against Impersonators |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has raised the alarm over a growing wave of recruitment fraud targeting Nigerian job seekers, warning the public to exercise caution amid reports that scammers are increasingly impersonating Commission officials to swindle unsuspecting applicants.

The Commission issued the advisory through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, disclosing that fraudsters have adopted multiple channels including WhatsApp messages, unsolicited emails, and direct telephone calls to falsely present themselves as PenCom personnel offering employment opportunities.

According to PenCom, the scheme typically involves creating artificial urgency, with scammers imposing fabricated 48-hour deadlines to pressure targets into surrendering sensitive personal information before they can properly verify the claims.

“The scammers often create a sense of urgency, claiming a 48-hour deadline to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information,” the Commission stated.

PenCom further disclosed that victims are routinely directed to submit confidential documents including identification details and personal records to a purported “secretary” via WhatsApp, a method the Commission identified as a conspicuous red flag that members of the public should treat with immediate suspicion.

The Commission urged Nigerians, particularly job seekers, to verify all recruitment-related communications through its official channels before responding to any solicitation claiming to originate from PenCom.

It stressed that all legitimate recruitment exercises are conducted through verified and publicly announced processes.
