Lagos Moves to Boost Rail Capacity, Considers Extension into Ogun|LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Governor of Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed the acquisition of 24 new train coaches for the Red Line Rail project, stating that the development will significantly improve transportation across Lagos State.

Speaking to State House correspondents at Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday, the governor explained that the new rolling stock procured from China will strengthen the state’s multimodal transport system and ease commuting challenges.

Sanwo-Olu revealed that the Red Line will operate eight-car trains, doubling the capacity of the Blue Line, which currently runs four-car trains.

According to him, the 27-kilometre corridor stretching from Oyingbo to Agbado is expected to handle up to 37 daily trips and transport more than 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational.

He also disclosed that discussions are underway to extend the Red Line into neighbouring Ogun State, a move aimed at accommodating increasing commuter demand beyond Lagos.

In addition to rail expansion, the governor highlighted progress on the Omi-Eko water transport initiative.

He said high-capacity electric boats are expected to be introduced by 2027 to enhance ferry services and complement existing road and rail systems.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the integration of rail, road, and water transportation is central to the state’s long-term mobility strategy.

He noted that improved infrastructure would not only ease movement but also drive economic growth, increase productivity, and boost internally generated revenue.

The governor added that similar investments previously made on the Blue Line are being replicated on the Red Line to further strengthen Lagos’ rail network.
