US President Donald Trump has announced a proposed arrangement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the supply of millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to the United States and the global market.

Trump disclosed this in a statement, saying his discussion with Putin had resulted in an agreement for Russia to immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes thereafter.

According to the US president, Russia would subsequently deliver an additional three million tonnes of diesel fuel within a short period, depending on the condition of its diesel refineries.

Trump said the proposed supplies, alongside what he described as US control of the Strait of Hormuz, would lead to a significant and rapid reduction in diesel prices in the United States and other parts of the world.

He identified lower fuel costs for American farmers, ranchers and truckers as a major priority, adding that the development represented a significant announcement for the energy market.

The US president also reiterated his position that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

However, details of the reported agreement, including its implementation timeline and the confirmation of the proposed supply arrangements by the Russian government, were not provided in the statement.

The announcement comes amid continuing international concerns over energy supply, fuel prices and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global oil and petroleum product shipments.
