A LagFerry vessel, Igbega Eko, burst into flames on Thursday morning while en route to Victoria Island, causing panic among passengers.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, left several passengers injured as they scrambled for safety.
Confirming the development, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) stated that its officers were present at the scene to prevent the fire from escalating.
“There was a bang, and fire suddenly engulfed the boat. The cause remains unclear, but investigations are ongoing,” a NIWA official told Tribune Online.
Similarly, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) corroborated the incident, noting that the cause of the fire was still under investigation. In an official statement issued by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, the agency reported that four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, working in close coordination with LagFerry, boat operators, and other first responders to manage the situation effectively. We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely,” the statement read.
LASWA emphasized that a thorough investigation is being conducted in collaboration with LagFerry and other relevant stakeholders to determine the cause of the incident. The agency reassured the public that all necessary safety measures remain in place and that ferry operations continue as scheduled.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures on Lagos waterways. We encourage all passengers to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying water transport services,” the statement concluded.
Authorities have urged passengers and ferry operators to remain vigilant and comply with all safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
