Traders at the Alegongo Market along Bashorun-Akobo Road in Ibadan have appealed to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to intervene and halt their forceful ejection from the market.
The traders staged a peaceful protest at the Oyo State Government Secretariat on Monday morning to express their displeasure over the eviction notice, which they described as abrupt and unfair.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the traders urged the state government to consider the prevailing economic hardship in the country, noting that the eviction would push thousands of market men and women into unemployment and worsen their already difficult living conditions.
They revealed that several meetings had been previously held with the local government council and the Ministry of Lands, during which resolutions were reportedly reached. However, they expressed shock at receiving a seven-day quit notice despite the agreements made.
LAGOS EYE NEWS gathered that a top government official has initiated a meeting between the concerned traders and relevant government agencies in an effort to resolve the issue amicably.
