Lagos Deputy Governor Laments Outrageous Electricity Bill on Official Residence |LAGOS EYE NEWS

…Bill Skyrocketed From N2.7million to N29million

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has lamented an outrageous electricity bill slammed on his official residence by the power distribution company supplying the area, Eko Disco.

Hamzat revealed that his bill skyrocketed from N2.7million to N29million.

Speaking on Monday during a roundtable event in Victoria Island, Hamzat revealed that his power bill skyrocketed from N2.7 million in March to a staggering N29 million in April. Despite paying for a prepaid meter, he claimed that the electricity company—Eko DisCo—has made it difficult to switch from estimated to metered billing.

“I bought a meter so I won’t keep getting estimated bills, but converting it has been a serious challenge,” Hamzat lamented.

He described the situation as a reflection of the widespread suffering among Lagosians due to overbilling, citing an example of a resident in Surulere’s Coker Aguda area who received a N2.8 million electricity bill—more than his N2 million annual rent.

“Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” he said.

Hamzat made the remarks while representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Lagos State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to expand electricity access to rural communities in the state.

Commending the Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, for facilitating the deal, Hamzat described the partnership as a step toward stable and inclusive power supply.

Ogunleye, in his remarks, noted that the collaboration with the REA would open new opportunities for underserved communities and emphasized Lagos’ growing leadership in renewable energy development.
