Panic gripped residents and motorists on Saturday morning after a fully-laden truck (registration number: GGE 624 YJ) lost control while navigating a sharp corner and plunged off the Agege Bridge along Old Abeokuta Road, Agege, Lagos.

Eyewitnesses and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the truck landed on two commercial mini-buses, popularly known as “Korope,” parked beneath the bridge.

According to Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver, who sustained severe fractures to both hands, lost control while maneuvering the Pen Cinema Bridge. The vehicle subsequently veered off the bridge, crushing the two buses below.

LASTMA officers, who responded swiftly to the scene, successfully rescued the injured driver and handed him over to officers of the Elere Police Division. He was later transferred to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical treatment.

To prevent further accidents, LASTMA personnel quickly cordoned off the accident site and diverted traffic. Operatives from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit promptly cleared the wreckage, restoring normal traffic flow along the busy corridor.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep concern and urged all motorists, especially truck drivers, to exercise greater caution, particularly as the rainy season sets in.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety regulations, including the use of newly introduced speed-limiting devices, designed to curb accidents and enhance the safety of all road users.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also extended heartfelt wishes for the swift recovery of the injured driver.
