In a major boost to sports infrastructure and inclusiveness, the Lagos State Sports Commission, in collaboration with Zen Archery, has officially launched the Lagos Zen Archery Arena at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the new facility as a testament to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to advancing, supporting, and promoting mass participation in sports.
“This facility provides opportunities for different categories of archers to have a befitting space to practice and develop their talents. It attests to the possibilities in sports development and promotes diversity and inclusivity, not just in Lagos but across Nigeria,” Fatodu said.
He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for providing the necessary support and enabling environment for the establishment of the arena, noting that it reflects the state’s determination to identify, nurture, and promote new talents beyond mainstream sports.
“In Lagos, we are known for our excellence and leadership in innovating new ideas. Once again, we have proven our capacity to lead in the development of new sporting initiatives,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Lagos State Archery Association and Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bode Ojajuni, lauded the collaborative efforts of the Lagos State Government, particularly the Sports Commission, and the founder of Zen Archery, Mr. Emmanuel Oyeleke, for their roles in making the project a reality.
Ojajuni emphasized that the Lagos Zen Archery Arena would serve as a platform to discover and train new talents, especially among school children and at the grassroots level.
“This year, we plan to organize a Judge Course in preparation for the Lagos Zen Archery Competition slated for June. We are also gearing up to participate in the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State,” he disclosed.
Founder of Zen Archery, Mr. Emmanuel Oyeleke, described the event as historic, highlighting the significance of public-private partnerships in sports development.
“To fast-track sports development in Lagos and Nigeria, we must build more facilities that create enabling environments for talents to be identified and nurtured,” Oyeleke said.
He noted that the new facility would facilitate more programmes, clinics, and training sessions for archers, including opportunities for underprivileged kids to hone their skills.
Oyeleke expressed deep appreciation for the support from the Lagos State Government towards the establishment of the arena, reaffirming their commitment to contributing to the growth of sports in the state.
