The Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the tragic death of one of its operatives, Mr. Lamidi Abiodun, who was killed in an ambush by suspected armed hoodlums at the Papa boundary area in Iwo.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday after a distress call was received from local farmers in the Papa Farm area. The farmers reported an attack on their farmland, prompting the Iwo Area Command of the Amotekun Corps to dispatch a response team, accompanied by members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), to the scene.
Upon arrival, the operatives were ambushed by a group of armed men, reportedly led by a notorious gang leader identified as Akeem Olofa. During the violent encounter, Mr. Abiodun was attacked. Although he initially survived gunfire, he was fatally struck in the head with a machete and died on the spot.
Other members of the joint security team managed to escape the ambush, though one VGN member, Nurudeen Alowonle, is still missing as of the time of filing this report. Another operative, Alex Sola, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
The body of the late Mr. Abiodun has been deposited at a local mortuary, and the incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police in Iwo. Investigations are currently underway, and authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the attackers.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Mr. Yusuf Idowu Abass, the agency expressed deep sorrow over the loss and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies,” the statement read.
The Amotekun Corps extended its condolences to the family of Mr. Abiodun, hailing him as a hero who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
