President Trump has just announced that Mike Waltz will no longer serve as his National Security Adviser and will instead be nominated to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
This announcement comes just hours after reports indicated that Waltz was stepping down from his role as National Security Adviser.
Here is President Trump’s statement in full:
“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress, and as my National Security Adviser, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.
In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Adviser while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department.
Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to make America—and the world—SAFE AGAIN.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
—Donald Trump
U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz will leave his post and be nominated to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations, President Donald Trump says.
Waltz created a Signal group chat—into which a journalist was inadvertently added—where high-ranking officials reportedly planned military strikes in Yemen.
Trump’s team previously downplayed the security risks, stating that no classified material was shared in the chat.
The White House appears to have waited for the “Signalgate” controversy to subside before taking action, writes North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher.
This move comes in the same week Trump marked his first 100 days in office.
