FG Lauds UN Partnership in Fight Against Gender, Child Violence |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, has lauded the United Nations for its continued support in addressing sexual violence against women and children in Nigeria.

Speaking today at the occasion of the visit of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to the Sexual Assault Referral Center ( SARC) in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory). Abuja, Honourable Minister Imaan emphasized the Nigerian Government’s commitment in protecting Children’s rights and promoting gender equality.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government Agencies, civil society organizations and international partners in combating sexual assault and violence in all its forms.

According to the Minister, “this visit to SARC is a testament to our shared values and Commitment to support survivors of sexual violence. We must continue to work together to ensure that our laws and policies protect the rights of children and promote a culture of zero tolerance for gender based violence”, the Minister remarked.

The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative , SRSG, UN VAC, Dr Najat Maalla M’jid, who went on a facility tour of the Center domiciled within Bwari General hospital premises, also visited survivors, health care providers and Social workers to ascertain and understand the scope of the project, the challenges and successes of the Centre.

She also reaffirmed the importance of providing comprehensive support services to survivors, including medical care, counselling and legal assistance.

“This visit to SARC Bwari has shown me the Critical work being done to support survivors of sexual violence. We must all continue to work together to ensure that survivors receive both the care and support they need”, she reiterated.

Other stakeholders were also unanimous in the view that Nigeria has come of age as a just and equitable society where the rights of children and women must always be upheld.
