Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
The 69-year-old American was chosen by the conclave of 133 cardinals to succeed Pope Francis, becoming the first pope from the United States in the Church’s history.
Like Pope Francis who championed migrants and the poor, Prevost has long embraced marginalized groups.
He now assumes spiritual leadership of more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
Further details on the papal election and the new pope’s vision for the Church are expected in the coming days.
