The Lagos State Government on Saturday commenced the demolition of illegal structures and makeshift shanties within the Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA), in a move aimed at restoring order and enhancing security in the upscale neighbourhood.
Led by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki, the enforcement team targeted unauthorised buildings along key streets including Michael Otedola, Sowemimo, Remi Fani-Kayode and Ajisafe. Structures demolished included wooden stalls, makeshift shops, and other non-compliant constructions.
According to Oki, the crackdown followed mounting complaints from residents over the proliferation of shanties and unlawful building modifications, which were said to pose a threat to public safety and urban infrastructure.
“There have been persistent concerns from the residents of Ikeja GRA about irregularities in construction and the growing number of security black spots,” Oki said. “We began enforcement from 9 a.m. today, inspecting various sites. While most developments had valid approvals, the major issue remains illegal conversions and unapproved structures.”
He cited cases where developers altered approved building plans, such as converting duplexes into multiple flats or exceeding the approved number of units, actions which, he said, place undue pressure on utilities and disrupt the area’s urban planning.
“This is not a witchhunt. It is about safety, planning, and enforcing the rule of law,” Oki stressed, adding that letters had earlier been sent to property owners requesting submission of building approvals for verification.
He also emphasized that the operation followed due process, with months of prior notice and community engagement. “We are clearing out structures that encourage criminality, including locations where stolen goods were allegedly being sold,” he said.
Oki concluded by warning that any property found to be in violation of regulations would be marked, and failure to comply with corrective measures would lead to demolition.
