The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria has denied claims that delays in visa processing were responsible for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) withdrawal from the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.
In a statement addressing media reports, the Embassy clarified that it received a formal visa request from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission on April 24, referencing a letter dated April 22. In response, the Embassy said it promptly engaged with the Commission and provided guidance on the preparation of the necessary documentation.
According to the statement, visa applications were officially submitted to the China Visa Application Centre on May 6 and underwent expedited processing, with completion on May 8.
“The Embassy has always supported sports and cultural cooperation with Nigeria and remains committed to providing efficient visa services,” the statement read.
“However, visa issuance is a sovereign matter that requires appropriate documentation and time for processing.”
While expressing regret over the Nigerian athletes’ inability to participate in the international competition, the Embassy insisted that the AFN’s narrative does not reflect the actual timeline and facts.
China reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expressed willingness to support Nigerian athletes in future international events.
