The Northern Governors Forum has called on the National Assembly to enact legislation for the creation of state police, as part of efforts to strengthen security across the country.
The call was made in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting held on Saturday.
The communiqué was read by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
According to Governor Yahaya, “The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off.”
The governors also resolved to enhance interstate border surveillance as a strategy to effectively combat insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities in the region.
The Forum commended the Federal Government for its ongoing efforts in addressing security challenges and bridging infrastructural deficits across the country.
It also expressed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Governors Forum in tackling security challenges nationwide.
The meeting was attended by the 19 Northern Governors alongside the chairmen of the traditional councils from the northern states.
